Bhakra Dam is located in the Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh. The nearest big town is Nangal, which is in Punjab. From Nangal, the dam is about 15 kilometres away. The drive is smooth and you will pass through green hills and small villages.

If you are coming by train, Nangal Railway Station is the closest stop. There are lots of options. From there, you can take a taxi or a local bus. Both work well in my opinion. If you are flying, Chandigarh Airport is the nearest one, about 100 kilometres away. From Chandigarh, you can hire a cab or use buses that go towards Bilaspur and Nangal. The roads are well connected, so travelling is not very difficult.

As you get closer, you will notice the vast stretch of water that the dam holds back. The reservoir is called Gobind Sagar Lake. It spreads across many kilometres and looks like a sea tucked between hills. The view is breathtaking, especially during sunrise and sunset.

What You Can See and Do

Ummm, lots and lots. But, the first thing you will notice is the size of the dam. It is 226 metres high, which is taller than the Qutub Minar. Looking down from the top can make you feel small and amazed at the same time. I adored it and so will you. You can also visit viewpoints around the area to see Gobind Sagar Lake. The calm water with mountains in the background is perfect for photography.

There are boating options in the lake as well. Sitting on a boat, with cool breeze on your face, is a relaxing experience. You kind of forget everything bad going on. Atleast, I did. Many people also come for picnics. You can sit by the water, enjoy snacks, and take in the peaceful surroundings. 

It is also a good idea to explore nearby towns. Nangal is close by and has local markets. Bilaspur town is not very far and gives you a chance to see Himachali culture. If you are into temples, you will find many small shrines around the region.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Bhakra Dam is between September and March. The weather is cool and comfortable. Summers can get very hot, especially in May and June. During the rainy season, the area gets heavy rainfall, so it may not be safe to travel then. Winter gives a fresh feel to the surroundings and makes walking around pleasant.

If you want to see the reservoir full, monsoon months are when the water level is at its peak. But the best time for tourists is the cooler season, when the air is crisp and the skies are clear. Plan your trip in the morning or late afternoon. This way, you can avoid the harsh sun and also enjoy the best views of sunrise or sunset.

What to Wear and Carry

Your clothing depends on the season. In winter, carry warm clothes like jackets and sweaters. In summer, light cotton clothes are best. Always wear comfortable shoes because you may have to walk around to reach viewpoints. Sunglasses, hats, and sunscreen are helpful if you are visiting in sunny months.

Carry a water bottle, as you may not find shops everywhere. Keep some snacks with you too, especially if you are travelling with kids. A camera or even your phone is a must because you will not want to miss capturing the wide views of the dam and the lake.

Since this is a dam area, security is strict. Always carry an ID card with you. Do not try to enter restricted zones, as they are not open for the public. Follow the rules and respect the natural surroundings.

Food and Stay Options

Near Bhakra Dam, you will not find many big hotels. But Nangal and Bilaspur have good options for staying. I stayed there for a day and I don’t have any complaints. There are guest houses, small hotels, and lodges that fit different budgets. If you prefer comfort, staying in Chandigarh and making a day trip is also a good idea.I am more of an adventurous person so I preferred the first option. 

For food, small eateries and dhabas serve local dishes. You can try parathas, rajma chawal, and chai. The food is simple, tasty, and filling. Carry some light snacks with you for the journey, as you may not find restaurants very close to the dam itself.

Travel Tips

Plan your trip in advance, especially during holiday seasons when more people come. Start early in the morning so you have enough time to explore the dam and nearby areas. Avoid littering and keep the place clean. If you are travelling with kids, keep an eye on them near the water.

Respect the locals and their culture. People around the dam are friendly and welcoming. A small chat with them can give you interesting stories about the place. You may also learn how the dam has changed their lives.

Mobile networks work fine in most places, but sometimes signals can be weak near the hills. So, it is good to inform someone before your trip. Always keep some cash handy as small shops may not accept digital payments.
