Tracing its Roots

Bir Monastery has a rich history that dates back to the 16th century. When the great Tibetan master Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche), visited and blessed the area. Then in the 17th century, the great master Nyingma, Terton Mingyur Dorje, discovered a sacred site on this land and built a small temple there.

Over the centuries, this site has been expanded and developed, with the current monastery complex built in the early 1970s by Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche.

The Main Monastery Complex is the heart of the Bir Monastery and is a breathtaking view to behold. Chokling Monastery is a satellite monastery of Bir Monastery, located around 8 km away. It was built by the 3rd Neten Chokling Rinpoche, who was a close disciple of the 16th Karmapa. This location reflects the peace, tranquility, and scenic beauty instilled in other elements that make up the Bir Monastery. Bir Billing is best suited to the adventure enthusiast that visits Bir Monastery. It is a nearby destination famous for paragliding. Located around 14 km away from Bir Monastery, it showcases a mindblowing view of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
