The Chamunda Devi Temple was built in 8th century AD by Raja Sahil Varman of Chamba as a tribute to Goddess Durga or Chamunda Devi. The temple is believed to have been frequented by Guru Gobind Singh Ji in 1660 AD during his visit to Chamba. The current structure of the temple was built by Maharaja Umed Singh in 1828 AD and it is situated near the Laxmi Narayan Temples. It is said that due to the fear of Mughal invaders, many idols were hidden in various places for safety; including one of Maa Durga at this temple location!
Rituals and Festivals
The temple is an important religious site for Hindus, and the festivities are celebrated in full bloom. The Navratras (nine days) of Ashwin and Chaitra, Ramnavami, Janmashtami, Shivratri, Sharad Purnima, Diwali and Basant Panchmi are some of the major festivals that are celebrated here. Special aarti is performed by priests who wear traditional attire with flowers adorning their hair during these occasions. Along with holy offerings like coconut, incense sticks etc., devotees also bring Gangajal or Ganga water for the rituals.
Architecture Of The Temple
The structure of the Chamunda Devi Temple is a magnificent sight to behold. Its architecture reflects a mix of Mughal and Rajput styles. The entrance gate is beautified with various sculptures of Hindu gods like Ganesha, Hanuman and Brahma. Inside the temple complex stands two-storied pagoda-style shrine which houses the idols of Goddess Durga in the form of Chamunda Devi along with Bhairav Nathji and Lord Shiva, all finely carved in black stone.
Facts About The Temple Complex
The complex consists of three distinct temples – Laxmi Narayan Temple, Radha Krishan Temples and Chamunda Devi Temple – all connected via a walled enclosure with two gates and four turrets. The entrance gate features intricate carvings showcasing Hindu deities along with flowers, animals and other motifs from mythology. Inside the complex lies a large tank filled with water from River Ravi which is used to perform sacred rituals such as parikrama (circumambulation). In addition to these structures, there is also an ancient Shiv Mandir dating back centuries which still stands today!
The main attraction of Chamunda Devi Temple complex is undoubtedly its stunning architecture! The interiors feature intricate stone carvings depicting scenes from Hindu mythology while its exterior boasts spectacular views over the valley below. The walls are decorated with vibrant colors depicting Hindu gods and goddesses while its domes are carved with images of lotus petals symbolizing peace and tranquility.
Additionally, there are several shrines located within the complex dedicated to various Hindu deities such as Shiva Lingam, Parvati Mata, Nandi Bull etc. Other attractions include several ancient sculptures and paintings depicting stories from mythology as well as folk tales from Himachal Pradesh’s rich culture. Every year on Dusshera day (the 10th day after Navratri), thousands flock to this holy shrine for worshiping goddess Durga/Chamunda Devi during puja ceremonies held here throughout the day!
