The memorial is a constant reminder of those brave soldiers who laid down their lives so that India could remain safe from external invaders. Every year at dawn on May 28th, thousands of people gather here to pay tribute to these fallen heroes.
The War Memorial Dharamshala was constructed in 1965 to honor the brave soldiers of India who laid down their lives during World War II. It is a unique memorial, comprising of 6 pillars on which are inscribed the names and decorations of those who lost their lives while serving their country.
The idea for such a memorial originated from Major-General VN Srinivasan, who served as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Kumaon & Garhwal Division. He felt that there should be an appropriate monument to commemorate all those Indian soldiers who had sacrificed their lives in defense of their nation. He proposed his idea to then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who immediately approved it and gave instructions for the memorial to be built in Dharamshala.
The War Memorial was designed by the famous Indian architect Charles Correa, who designed it as an open-air pavilion. He used red and brown sandstone for the pillars and corresponding flooring, which provided a stark contrast against the lush green surrounding hills of Dharamshala. The 6 pillars of the memorial represent the six divisions of the Indian Army at that time.
The names of over 2,000 soldiers who laid down their lives defending India during World War II are inscribed on these pillars. A plaque near the entrance reads: “This memorial is dedicated to those brave sons of India who laid down their lives in defense of their motherland.”
The memorial also serves as a site for annual remembrance services conducted by various organizations and dignitaries. Each year, veterans and families lay wreaths in honor of all those who gave up their lives for our nation. It is a solemn reminder to us all of the sacrifices made by our military men and women to keep us safe and free from harm.
The War Memorial Dharamshala is truly a special place and an important reminder of India’s legacy of heroism and sacrifice. Visiting this memorial will give you an appreciation for the selfless service of all those who laid down their lives so that we may live in freedom today.
The War Memorial was constructed in 1965 by then-Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri as a tribute to the martyrs of Indian armed forces who sacrificed their lives for India during World War I and World War II. This memorial also serves as a shrine for those who were killed in action in various conflicts since 1947, such as Kargil, Indo-Pak war and Operation Vijay (Kashmir). It is also dedicated to those who lost their lives while on missions outside India, particularly during UN Peacekeeping operations. Moreover, it also commemorates those who lost their lives while serving with Indian peacekeeping forces abroad.
