Bhagsunag Temple is located in Bhagsu Village, a short distance from McLeod Ganj, in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, India. It's approximately 2 km from McLeod Ganj bus stand and 7 km from Dharamshala.
The temple is primarily dedicated to Lord Shiva and the local deity, Nag Devta (the Snake God).
According to legend, about 5000 years ago, a local king named Bhagsu stole water from the sacred Nag Dal Lake, which angered Nag Devta, the snake god. A battle ensued, in which King Bhagsu was vanquished. Before his death, King Bhagsu sought forgiveness from Nag Devta, who granted his wish that his name would be associated with the place. Thus, the site became known as "Bhagsunag," and the temple was built in reverence to both Lord Shiva (as Nag Devta appeared in the form of Shiva) and King Bhagsu.
The temple generally opens early in the morning (around 5:00 AM) and closes in the evening (around 9:00 PM), with a brief closure in the afternoon (e.g., 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM). It is open all days of the year.
