Tour Plan and Itenary

Chandratal Lake is situated in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, India. It lies at an altitude of approximately 4,300 meters (14,100 feet) above sea level, near the Kunzum Pass, which connects the Lahaul Valley to the Spiti Valley.

The best time to visit Chandratal Lake is from June to September. During these months, the snow has largely melted, and the roads leading to the lake are accessible. The weather is relatively pleasant during the day, though nights can still be very cold. July and August offer lush green landscapes, while September provides clearer skies and fewer tourists, making it ideal for photography. The lake is completely frozen and inaccessible during winter (October/November to May).

Chandratal Lake is typically reached by road from Manali or Kaza.

  • From Manali: The most common route is via the Leh-Manali Highway, crossing the Rohtang Pass (or Atal Tunnel) to Gramphu, then continuing towards Batal. From Batal, a rough and narrow road of about 14-15 km leads to a parking area, from where you have to trek for about 1-2 km to reach the lake.
  • From Kaza: You can take a taxi or bus towards Manali and get off at Batal, then proceed as above.
  • Trekking: Many trekkers doing the Hampta Pass trek end near Chatru and then drive to Chandratal.

As of current information, no special permits are generally required for Indian citizens to visit Chandratal Lake. However, it's always advisable to carry valid photo ID. For foreign nationals, an Inner Line Permit (ILP) might be required for certain parts of the Spiti Valley. It's best to check for the latest regulations before your trip.

No, direct camping on the banks of Chandratal Lake is strictly prohibited to preserve its fragile ecosystem. However, several private tour operators set up temporary campsites (with basic tented accommodations) about 1-2 km away from the lake. These camps typically offer sleeping bags, mats, and basic meals.

There are no permanent hotels or restaurants directly at Chandratal Lake. The only accommodation options are the temporary campsites mentioned above, which operate during the tourist season. These camps provide basic meals (like dal, rice, sabzi, roti, and chai). It's highly recommended to carry your own snacks, water, and essential supplies.

Even during the peak season (June-September), the weather at Chandratal can be unpredictable and cold.

  • Daytime temperatures: Range from 10°C to 20°C, with strong sun.
  • Nighttime temperatures: Can drop to 0°C or even below, especially with strong winds. Always pack layers of warm clothing, including thermals, a fleece, a windproof jacket, gloves, and a woollen cap.
  • Photography: The lake's changing colors and stunning surroundings make it a paradise for photographers.
  • Stargazing: With minimal light pollution, the night sky is incredibly clear, offering spectacular views of the Milky Way.
  • Trekking/Walking: You can walk around the 5 km circumference of the lake, which offers different perspectives.
  • Camping: Experience a night under the stars in the temporary camps.
  • Relaxation: Simply soak in the serene beauty and tranquility of the high-altitude landscape.
