Tour Plan and Itenary
Chango Village is located in the Hangrang Valley, within the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. It's situated at an altitude of approximately 3,058 meters (10,033 feet) above sea level. It's often considered one of the last villages in Kinnaur before entering the Spiti Valley, near Nako village.
Chango Village is primarily famous for:
- Apple Orchards: It's known for growing high-quality apples in its arid climate.
- Buddhist Influence: Being largely a Buddhist village, it features ancient monasteries and a strong Tibetan Buddhist culture.
- Scenic Beauty: Surrounded by high hills and offering a transition from the greener parts of Kinnaur to the stark landscapes of Spiti.
- Cultural Experience: Visitors can immerse themselves in the local culture, interact with friendly villagers, and witness traditional lifestyle.
- Chango Monastery (Changu Gompa): This is a significant attraction, reportedly featuring a 500-year-old prayer wheel made of yak skin, measuring about 3.5 meters (11 feet) in diameter.
- Rinchen Zangpo Temple: Located in Lower Chango, this temple stands out with its red walls on a small promontory.
- Village Temple: A more regularly used place of worship with a large prayer wheel, clay idols, and contemporary wall paintings.
- Ancient Lord Shiva Temple: Dating back over 500 years, this temple also holds historical and cultural significance.
- Apple Orchards: Especially beautiful during the apple blooming season (spring) and harvest season (late August to October).
The best time to visit Chango Village is generally from March to October.
- Spring (March-May): Pleasant weather, and you can witness wildflowers blooming and apple orchards in bloom.
- Summer (June-August): Ideal for exploring with comfortable daytime temperatures, though monsoon (July-August) can bring risks of landslides in the region.
- Autumn (September-October): Post-monsoon, the skies are clearer, and it's apple harvest season, offering a vibrant experience. Winter (November-February) brings heavy snowfall and extreme cold, making access challenging and many establishments closed.
Chango Village is typically accessed via the Shimla-Kinnaur-Spiti highway.
- From Shimla/Reckong Peo: You can take a bus or taxi. Chango is about 122-123 km from Kalpa and part of the route towards Nako and further into Spiti. HRTC buses run daily from Reckong Peo towards Kaza, passing through Chango.
- From Manali/Spiti (Kaza): If coming from Manali, you'd cross the Atal Tunnel/Rohtang Pass, then traverse the Spiti Valley. Chango is a village on the Kinnaur side, after Sumdo and Nako. The roads to Chango can be challenging, especially due to high altitude and mountainous terrain.
Being a small and remote village, Chango offers limited accommodation options, primarily homestays. These homestays provide a chance to experience local hospitality and traditional Kinnauri/Spitian food. It's advisable to book in advance, especially during peak season. Basic local cuisine with Tibetan and Indian influences (like momos, thukpa, local bread, and dishes made from local produce like potatoes, corn, and wheat flour) can be found.
Given its high altitude and mountainous climate, regardless of the season, it's essential to pack:
- Layered warm clothing: Even in summer, evenings and mornings can be chilly. Include thermals, sweaters, a windproof jacket, gloves, and a woollen cap.
- Comfortable walking/trekking shoes: For exploring the village and surrounding areas.
- Sun protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat, as the sun at high altitude is strong.
- Basic first-aid kit: Including medicines for common ailments and AMS.
- Water bottle and essential snacks.
- Power bank: Electricity can be intermittent.
The local culture in Chango is heavily influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. You'll observe traditional architecture, prayer flags, and a generally peaceful way of life. Festivals throughout the year offer a chance to experience traditional dance forms and music. The locals are known for their hospitality.
