Tour Plan and Itenary
Chobia Pass is located in the Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas, within the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, India. It's a significant trekking pass that connects the Chamba Valley with the Lahaul Valley (specifically the Chenab Valley side). It lies between two prominent peaks: Tent Peak (6133 m) and Barakanda Peak (5877 m).
The altitude of Chobia Pass is approximately 4,966 meters (16,292 feet) above sea level, making it one of the higher passes in the Pir Panjal range.
The best time to undertake the Chobia Pass trek is typically from June to September (or sometimes extending to early October). During these months, the heavy snow from winter melts, making the trails accessible and the weather relatively more favorable for trekking. However, even in these months, mountain weather can be unpredictable, and cold temperatures are common, especially at night. It's crucial to avoid the monsoon season (July-August) due to increased risks of landslides and slippery paths. The pass is closed and inaccessible during winter due to heavy snowfall.
The Chobia Pass trek is generally considered difficult or challenging. It involves high altitudes, steep ascents and descents, traverses over moraines, and potentially crevassed glaciers, especially early in the season. It is not suitable for beginners and requires a good level of physical fitness, prior trekking experience in high altitudes, and the guidance of experienced local guides.
The Chobia Pass trek typically takes 5 to 7 days to complete, depending on the chosen itinerary, starting point, and trekking pace. The trek often starts from Bharmour and can end in Trilokinath or Udaipur in Lahaul.
The primary base village for the Chobia Pass trek is Bharmour in the Chamba district. From Bharmour, trekkers often proceed to villages like Hadsar or Chobia and then to higher camps like Kathedu Temple and Alyas (Base Camp).
Chobia Pass is historically significant as a traditional route for the semi-nomadic Gaddi shepherds who use it for seasonal migration with their flocks between the high-altitude pastures of Lahaul and the lower valleys of Chamba. They have an intimate knowledge of the terrain and often perform rituals at the pass for a safe crossing.
