The history of the Shoolini Devi temple dates back to 1651 AD when Raja Karam Prakash of Kangra constructed it as a tribute to Goddess Durga. Legend has it that Raja Karam Prakash was cured from leprosy after he prayed to Goddess Durga in this very temple. In appreciation for his miraculous recovery, he built this beautiful shrine dedicated to the goddess.
The annual fair held in honor of Goddess Shoolini Devi draws thousands of devotees from all over India every year. The fair begins on Ashad Sudi Amavasya (the first day after the New Moon) and continues for three days until Ashad Sudi 3rd (the third day after the New Moon). During this time, devotees gather in large numbers to pay their respects and seek blessings from Goddess Shoolini Devi. A grand procession is taken out on these days with a decorated chariot carrying a statue of Goddess Shoolini Devi accompanied by traditional music and dance performances.
The highlight of this fair is the wrestling competition that takes place between two teams known as ‘Dangals’ or ‘Malla Yuddha’—a revered form of combat that was once practiced by ancient warriors in India.
