Tour Plan and Itenary
The temple is located beside Parashar Lake in Mandi District, Himachal Pradesh – 175005, at an altitude of 2,730 meters above sea level.
The temple is dedicated to Sage Parashar, the grandson of Rishi Vashishta and the father of Ved Vyasa. Legend has it that Parashar Rishi meditated at this very spot, lending an aura of sanctity and reverence to the temple grounds.
The ancient pagoda-style temple was constructed by King Ban Sen in the 13th–14th century, with the Rishi being present in the form of a Pindi (stone). It is also said that the whole temple was built using a single deodar tree and it took 12 years to complete.
The temple is a three-tiered pagoda-style structure made of deodar wood and stone, featuring intricate carvings of deities, floral motifs, and mythical creatures, and a tiered slate roof that blends seamlessly with the alpine landscape.
Parashar Lake is decorated by a floating island in its crystal-clear waters. Traditionally, it is believed that the lake was formed as a result of Rishi Prashar striking the ground with his rod (Gurj), from where water emerged and took the shape of the lake.
The island in the lake is said to move, never staying in one place. The island is made of silt and debris, and it is believed to be held in place by methane gas bubbles. The floating island is considered sacred and is believed to be blessed by the sage's presence.
The best time to visit Parashar Rishi Temple is between April and November, when the weather is pleasant and the roads are accessible. Winter offers a snow-covered landscape, making it a magical but challenging trip for adventurous travelers.
